Writing can be a daunting task, and I figure we need all the help we can get – I do anyway… How do we get that help? We should always be looking for new writing tools. Well, one obvious tool is to look to those who have gone before us. I have started to compile a list of great books on the craft of writing. If you pick up one of these books and find it useful, feel free to post a review about it here so others can see I’m not just saying it to say it.
Here is a list of books that I highly recommend for the aspiring writer:
My mother forbade me to read King when I was younger. I can see why – his books are intense, and the imagery is palpable. I have to say though, man, is this a powerful book. The first 2/3 of the book really revolves around King’s childhood, and his struggles with writing. It could really be a TV mini-series. It is quite a story.
The last 1/3 of the book is a gem. King has a way of wording things that just sticks with me. His writing advice is very simple, to the point, and memorable – and boy is it useful!. I absolutely recommend this book, even if you only read the last 1/3 of the book. Really, its a must-read.
Techniques of the Selling Writer
In my mind, this book is the holy grail of writing books. I found the answers to so many of my questions in this book. Also, its the type of book that you can’t digest in one read. Its literally reference material.
I originally picked this book up after reading Orson Scott Card’s book called How to Write Science Fiction & Fantasy (listed below). He recommended it, so I finally broke down and bought it. All I can say is – Wow.
How to Write Science Fiction & Fantasy
This was the first book I read on the specific idea of writing Sci-Fi and Fantasy. Orson Scott Card’s Hugo-award winning book is very helpful, especially if you are just starting out. Card explains the whole writing process in a very straight forward manner. You will likely find this helpful.
This book is widely recognized as the best book for referencing style and the basics of writing. You can also get this book online for free by clicking on the link below:
As I come across more books that can add value to our writing process I will post them here.
If you have read any of these books, please leave a comment. We would love to hear what you have to say.
Thanks
Justin
