Use sounds to help you write

Today’s writing tip is a little unusual. I recently read an article somewhere about trying to control the sounds you listen to while you write. While on one hand this concept isn’t new at all. Writers talk about the music they listen to while they write all the time. I have even recently seen some writers post their favorite play lists online. For me, music really can become distracting while I write. Sure, I’m human. I might listen to a certain song or two in order to get some inspiration, or to put me in the mood, but then I have to turn it off and write or I won’t get anything done.

When I talk about controlling your sound, I mean sound, not music. This writing article I read pointed me to a small software download that would let me control the sounds my keyboard makes when I type a keystroke. You can download typewriter sounds,  and other sounds too.

I have to say that after I have used this for a few days, there is almost something euphoric about hearing a bell dinging, or a typewriter typing in parallel with every one of your keystrokes. It is almost like someone is cheering you on to the finish line.

  1. I can agree with you that writing with music in the background is very distracting. Some how the words in the song get mixed up in my writing.

I like the way you worded that. For me, its the words more than it is the music. I will write with piano music or the like in the background, but as long as it doesn’t have any lyrics. If there are lyrics, I feel like I have to pay attention to the song so that I can sing along – especially because they are all songs I like!

    Happy writing
