We all need writing tips, no matter how experienced you are. If anything, they serve as a reminder to not over indulge. In most cases, its important that you understand the basics before you can really move on to advanced
techniques anyway. As a matter of fact, when you find yourself stuck or hard pressed to write something, it might just be because you are trying to do too much. So, here is a suggestion. When you find yourself having a hard time writing, simplify, don’t multiply.
What is the most basic sentence you can form? What do you need? Do you remember those old books from when you were younger called “Dick and Jane?” Well, they were trying to teach you just that – simplicity. To form the most basic sentence you can form, all you need is a subject and a verb. Consider the following sentences:
Dick ran.
Jill jumped.
Dogs bark.
People die.
There you have it. I know you can put together a sentence like that. All you need to do is write about something, and what it is doing. If you do that, you will have a sentence. Try it. If you get stuck, just write the most simple form of what you are trying to say, and then build from there. You may find that you get stuck because you try to do it the other way around.
When in doubt, simplify, don’t multiply.
Happy writing!
