Are you writing as often as you like? Are you sitting down and putting your hands on your keyboard, but not getting anything written? Well, if that’s the case, you may want to consider your writing space. In some cases an afterthought, writing environments are critical to your ability to write productively.
Here are a few writing tips about creating a writing environment that you can work in:
- Free from distractions (no kids, pets, or other moving projectiles darting around your writing space).
- Don’t face the windows or doors. You will want to look up every time something passes by.
- Unplug the Internet (yes, even if you want to “do research.” You won’t end up writing).
- Remove any TVs, video game systems, or other distractions that might pull your interest or focus away from writing.
- Consider the color of the room (if it doesn’t work, paint it a color that either inspires you, or gets you to relax)
- Hang inspiring paintings. One art form can usually inspire another.
- Surround yourself with good books. You can always touch one, or thumb through one for inspiration.
- Remove the clutter. Keep your writing space clean. Clutter distracts.
- Try different writing spaces. Try it at home, at the library, in a park etc. Learn what conditions you need to write.
- If you listen to music, make it music with no lyrics. You won’t be able to sing along, and you can keep writing.
- Write with pencil and paper. Some people just can’t concentrate while on a computer.
- Try voice activated writing software, like Dragon Speak 9.
